3. Disabling Windows Genuine Advantage Verification
Microsoft has now officially started blocking pirated copies of Windows
from using the Windows Update feature. With the latest Windows updates it
forces a new installer and new validation tool, once this is installed,
when you try to do a Windows update again, you get the message that you
you must first validate your Windows software. Validation assures that
you are using an authentic and fully licensed copy of Windows. The problem
is that WGA now runs on startup and nags you continually and consumes your
bandwidth with daily checks.
You can use
Autoruns to disable WGA from startup. To disable WGA, click on the
Winlogon folder, find the WGA entry and right click to delete it. Done,
no more nagging and wasted bandwidth.
Autoruns has the most comprehensive knowledge of auto-starting
locations of any startup monitor, shows you what programs are configured
to run during system bootup or login, and shows you the entries in the
order Windows processes them. These programs include ones in your startup
folder, Run, RunOnce, and other Registry keys. You can configure
Autoruns to show other locations, including Explorer shell
extensions, toolbars, browser helper objects, Winlogon notifications,
auto-start services, and much more. Autoruns goes way beyond the
MSConfig utility bundled with Windows Me and XP.
I hope this newsletter was useful to you and welcome all inquiries
and comments.
